Kevin Hanssen and Renee Mostert starred in David Mamet's brilliant play exploring power and gender "Oleanna". The production was performed at the Reps Theatre Upstairs from the 11th to the 20th of September 2008 and then again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009. Previous performers of this play on the West End and Broadway include David Suchet (Poirot), Aaron Eckhart and Julia Stiles. The play was made into a film of the same name in 1994.
"Oleanna" is the first of David Mamet's works to be performed in Zimbabwe to the best of our knowledge. David Mamet has been described as America's Harold Pinter. A unique and award winning writer who often says as much in his pauses as he does in dialogue. His style even has it's own name: Mametspeak. "Oleanna's" controversial and thought provoking nature had some audiences literally fighting in the foyer at previous productions! Sorry if you missed out.
"In the no-man's land between misunderstanding and sexual harassment, we watch with impotent dread as the relationship between professor and student entirely breaks down, as their mutual respect evaporates and an unbridgeable divide opens which can only destroy one or both of them. This is the gender war, and more than that. It's the generation gap, and more than that. It's the class struggle, and more than that.
During it's New York run, audiences actually came to blows as they left the theatre, so powerful is David Mamet's writing. Time since has changed nothing."
